These are Round beads of Barite (Baryte), with barium sulfate as its main component. As its Japanese name "Jusho-seki" (heavy spar) suggests, it is a natural stone that feels surprisingly heavy for its size. The reason for its weight is its high specific gravity, which is about 1.6-1.7 times that of Quartz (specific gravity 2.65). It was named Barite after the Greek word "Barys," meaning "heavy." Its Mohs hardness is low at 3-3.5, and it has cleavage in three directions, making it very fragile and difficult to process.
