The Nine Sons Of The Dragon are legendary creatures from Chinese mythology, the nine children born to the Dragon. Unable to become dragons themselves, each son has a unique personality and is popular as an amulet or Feng Shui item, utilizing their individual characteristics.
1. Bixi (贔屓): Resembles a turtle, carrying a stone pillar or stele on its back. It is said to possess the power to move forward positively, symbolizing its steady progress while bearing a heavy load.
2. Chiwen (螭吻): Resembles a beast. It was used as a roof decoration because it could survey all directions from a high vantage point. It is also considered the origin of the "Shachihoko" (mythical carp with a dragon's head).
3. Pulao (蒲牢): Said to be the most dragon-like of the Nine Sons. It enjoys shouting loudly, so it is sometimes used as a decoration for temple bells.
4. Bian (狴犴): Resembles a tiger. It is characterized by its hatred of evil and strong sense of justice. Used as a decoration above gates, its brave appearance is believed to guard against evil entry.
5. Taotie (饕餮): A beast-like creature said to love eating above all else. It symbolizes "gourmet food" and "never being short of food." It is also used as an amulet to "devour evil" by consuming everything.
6. Gongfu (蚣蝮): Has a turtle's body and a dragon's neck. It loves water and is believed to protect against floods and water disasters.
7. Yazi (睚眦): Known for its fierce temperament and love for battle, it was sometimes used as a decoration for weapons as a god of war.
8. Suanni (狻猊): Resembles a lion and loves smoke and fire, so it was used as a decoration for incense burners in temples. It is said to have the power to ward off evil.
9. Jiaotu (椒図): Said to resemble a frog, pond snail, or turban shell. It prefers to remain closed and is used as a decoration on house doors to prevent evil from entering.
