Yooperlite beads and cabochons

Yooperlite is a type of igneous rock known as sodalite-bearing syenite, discovered near Lake Superior in Michigan, USA.

At first glance, it appears to be an ordinary gray or black stone, but under ultraviolet (UV) light, the sodalite within it fluoresces a vivid orange, revealing a striking hidden glow.

The name “Yooperlite” comes from “Yooper,” a nickname for people from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where the stone was discovered in 2017. Since its discovery, Yooperlite has gained popularity among collectors and natural stone enthusiasts, attracting attention on social media.

A UV or blacklight flashlight is needed to reveal its brilliant fluorescence, making Yooperlite a fascinating natural stone with a hidden beauty that remains invisible under ordinary lighting.
