青金石是深受天然石愛好者喜愛的天然石，常被簡稱為「Lapis」，至今仍是最受歡迎的天然石之一。
其名稱源自拉丁語中表示石頭的「lapis」和波斯語中表示天藍色的「lazuli」。
這種深藍色的石頭自古希臘和埃及文明以來就一直用於珠寶裝飾，在佛教中，七寶之一的「瑠璃」指的也是青金石。
