Il s'agit d'une météorite chondritique découverte dans le désert du Sahara. Le terme "chondrite" désigne les météorites qui constituent la majorité (environ 86 %) des météorites tombant sur Terre et dont on dit qu'elles ressemblent à la composition géologique du soleil. On pense également que cette météorite est une roche qui s'est refroidie et solidifiée profondément sous terre sur Mars, à 100 m sous la surface, dans les temps anciens, et qui a ensuite été éjectée par une collision planétaire. La Sahara NWA se caractérise par sa couleur générale brun foncé et ses propriétés magnétiques naturelles. C'est un objet très populaire à la fois comme minéral et comme pierre de pouvoir.
