Il s'agit d'une météorite chondrite découverte dans le désert du Sahara. Le terme "chondrite" désigne la majorité des météorites (environ 86 %) qui tombent sur Terre, dont la composition géologique ressemblerait à celle du soleil. On pense également que cette météorite est une roche qui a refroidi et s'est solidifiée il y a longtemps à une profondeur de 100 m sous la surface de Mars, puis a été éjectée lors d'une collision planétaire. Une caractéristique du Sahara NWA est sa couleur brun foncé et ses propriétés magnétiques naturelles. C'est un article très populaire en tant que spécimen minéral et en tant que pierre de pouvoir.
