Il s'agit d'une météorite chondrite découverte dans le désert du Sahara. Le terme "chondrite" désigne la majorité des météorites (environ 86 %) qui tombent sur Terre, et dont la composition géologique ressemblerait à celle du soleil. On pense également que cette météorite est une roche qui s'est refroidie et solidifiée profondément sous la surface de Mars, à une profondeur de 100 m, dans les temps anciens, puis a été éjectée par une collision planétaire. Le Sahara NWA se caractérise par sa couleur marron foncé et ses propriétés magnétiques naturelles. C'est un article très populaire, à la fois comme minéral et comme pierre de pouvoir.
